Busy weekend
Sep. 26th, 2005 09:52 pmWell busy would probably be an understatement.
My sister-in-law is beginning a PhD in Edinburgh this year. Unfortunately, up till last week she lived in Newcastle. So this is where Anna and I come in.
Last Thursday we rented a van and drove up to Newcastle on the first leg of our journey. We made good time and spirits where high (to quote Anna "Yay, Road trip!"). We got to Newcastle early afternoon and made good work on packing a fair amount of Elspeth's goodies into the van before going to tea at a cool Italian restaurant called 'Cocomos' which had large flat screen tv's on the wall showing a fish tank in close up. After this we went for a look at the bridges over the Tyne. They are quite a sight. It really was an unusual sight to see the Tyne Bridge towering directly over a 6 or 7 storey building, I just wish I'd had my camera with me. Also on the far bank was a building called 'The Sage' which is a beautiful glass music venue, that looked really spectacular in the fading light. I really fancy going for a proper stay in Newcastle some time, but then it is on a pretty long list of places I'd like to have a 'proper' look round.
Well after a night on a matress on the floor (we'd already packed up the beds) we set off nice and early for Edinburgh. The van really felt different with almost a full load in it and I managed to make myself feel slightly uneasy going through the windy Scottish A roads before I got to grips with it properly. We managed to arrive without any mishaps and got to Elspeth's new place in the middle of town. I have to say I would have real problems living in the place but I never did the student thing and am very used to having lots of space to live in. Elspeth seems happy enough there, which is the important thing.
The next part of our day involved the two hour task of lugging all E's boxes of books and stuff up four flights of stairs to her flat (To quote Anna again "I sat down and my knee's turned to jelly"). This was definitely the worst part of the trip as I am really not in the best of shape (if I ever was) and I did not relish all the driving yet to come.
However, one bowl of roast red pepper soup and a chip butty later I was ready and raring to go (and if you believe that you'll believe anything, but it was a very good meal, well earned)
As it's getting late this will have to be the end of part one. More tomorrow (you really are gluttons for punishment, aren't you)
