night shift
Jun. 4th, 2005 04:18 amI suppose one of the few advantages I have of working nights is the fact that I am dependant (largely anyway) on the hospitals actually providing me with work to do. If the hospital doesn't call then, aside from a couple of housekeeping duties, I don't have anything to do. This having been said, last night and tonight have given me a great opportunity for a Firefly-fest. I've watched 11 out of the 14 episodes and they are still as good now as when I first saw them (Sorry Kristin ;)) It would be really hard to name a favourite episode out of this lot although 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' and 'Trash' are two that stand out (and not only for the wonderful Christina Hendricks ), along with what wound up being the series finale 'Objects in Space' Since it had to end this wasn't a bad place to finish as the story had a sense of ongoing closure, if that makes sense.
I would love to be able to find out the reason for this show getting cancelled, I really would. I know sci-fi doesn't seem to be flavour of the month at the moment with a number of good shows getting cancelled (and some not so good ones too) but I'm sure there is room for more than just Battlestar Galactica out there.
Interesting piece of news on the BBC website, it looks like the stakes are being raised in the build up to the release of the new Harry Potter book. I hadn't heard the rumour about the book but. . .
I'm not too sure I can get all that excited about it since it's the same rumour as we had before the last one. Unless of course JK Rowling is going to kill off Harry in this book (as she has rumoured she may do at some point in the series) and leave book seven to have a harry shaped hole and to see how everyone deals with that. Although I really doubt that is going to happen. I do hope that she really does take the opportunity and go to town on this one. Number five ended with the effective declaration of war between the order of the Pheonix and Voldemort and I for one will be most peeved if we don't get the war in full detail this time.
And for a first on this journal, my first meme, or rather two meme's swiped from
trixie_chick (I really am going to have to get up the nerve to ask about adding her to my friend list, I'm still not sure on the way to go about adding friends, do I need to ask people first or do I just do it and then worry about their reaction afterwards? What is the LJ code of decorum?) and then combined.
1. Total number of films I own on DVD/video:
not too sure on this one as I'm currently at work and so it's a bit hard to check but somewhere in the region of 90 to 100.
1a) Total number of books owned?
Again hard to verify but I would only be able to guess anyway since there's too many too count. Probably in the region of 400-450 though. My library was the last thing to get moved into our new house after I got married, just in case my books got there and suddenly all the locks got changed on me. I've often feared Anna only married me for my books ;)
2. Last film I bought:
The Animatrix, rented this a while back and have been waiting for the bargain bucket prices to pick it up.
2a) The last book I bought?
'The Dictators - Hitlers Germany, Stalins Russia' by Richard Overy. A light piece of holiday reading that I'm still wading through.
3. Last film I watched at the cinema:
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
3a) The last book I read?
'How to be Good' by Nick Hornby. Fell a bit flat but still had a number of very funny places. I think High Fidelity is still his best though.
4. Five films I watch a lot or mean a lot to me:
- Star Wars, the first film I saw at the cinema
- Schindlers List, a film that breaks my heart each time I see it
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, have to count these 3 as 1 but if push comes to shove then Fellowship of the Ring comes out on top.
- Seven Samurai, a wonderful piece of film making
- Gattaca, an excellent piece of sci-fi, wonderful atmosphere and styling
Of course, if I did this again next week it could all be different
4a) 5 books that mean a lot to me?
- The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
- The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, incredible series of books
- Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, only a slim graphic novel but a cracking story with great images
- The Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan, a bit of a cheat this one since I have only read bits out of it but it is a beautifully bound old copy with great colour illustrations in it. It's one of many that I mean to read at some point, honest.
- Holy Fools by Roly Bain, the theology of the clown or a clowning theology either way taught me a lot about living as a christian and how to be a clown (facepaints, bright clothes and stilt walking was a fun phase to go though)
But again if I where to make out this list with all my books infront of me then it could be quite different.
5. Let's add another one. 5 films I regret watching:
Not sure I can get 5 but lets see
- Godzilla (the one with Mathew Broderick) the only film I've come out of the cinema after and thought "That was awfull"
- Ned Kelly, a lot poorer than it should have been
And that will have to do for now, as the sun has come up while I've been sitting here and I have a couple of little jobs to attend to before I finish here.
But before I go, one of the other advantages of working nights is that my day shifts to having a midnight feast as my default evening meal, all week. Who says work has no silver lining ;)
